    CO2 Storage (CCS)

In recent years it has become apparent that it will be difficult to achieve the planned reduction of carbon dioxide as per the objectives set down in the Kyoto Protocol.

Bearing this in mind, there is one technology which has become the object of numerous research projects and which has already been implemented at some oil and gas fields. This is the underground sequestration of CO2. In Europe more than anywhere else, an attractive alternative is to store CO2 in coal – in abandoned mines, for example. Methane bonded to the surface of the coal can be replaced by CO2 owing to the physical properties of the two gases. This means that besides storing CO2, an additional bonus would be found in achieving greater methane production.

Our experts are involved in this area of work in various national and international research projects.
