Safety at the Surface
Gas that is emitted at the earth’s surface is hazardous especially in built-up areas or in areas where construction is to take place. In the eastern part of the Ruhr Region and in the Saarland in Germany there are several known regions where gas is liberated and makes its way into the cellars of buildings, in some instances forming a flammable mixture.
To provide relief in such regions we draw from a broad range of options to develop safety concepts that are tailored to each individual case:
- Sealing gas entry points
- Subsequent installation of a drainage system underneath the basement floor slab
- Laying drainage pipes outside buildings
- Drilling vent holes for the passive gas dissipation
- Drilling extraction boreholes for actively drawing off gas in the gas emission area.
We also implement safety measures where buildings are to be built over known gas emission areas. These measures include
- Laying drainage
- Installing special gas diversion layers
- Targeted degassing of underground mine cavities using boreholes.
We develop safety concepts especially for the zones around mine shafts so as to prevent gas migration and eliminate any risks associated with new construction.
