    Abandoned Mining

Problems can arise after mines have been closed down and ventilation shut off. Gas emission may appear at the surface and gas can invade adjacent mines. Especially in the areas around backfilled shafts, large quantities of noxious gas (generally methane, carbon dioxide) can be discharged. This has adverse affects on the climate. On the other hand, the residual gas quantities in mine workings represent great energy potentials that can be put to good use.

    We provide the following services:

    • Assessing the risks posed by the influx of CH4 when backfilling shafts
    • Assessing the risks posed by noxious gases in and near backfilled shafts
    • Measuring and evaluating gas emissions at the surface
    • Planning protection measures for buildings contaminated by gas
    • Planning gas drainage systems and gas evacuation plants
    • Estimating the exploitable quantities of gas remaining in underground mines
